MALAWI – AGRICULTURE
Malawi a landlocked country in southeastern
Africa. Endowed with spectacular highlands and
extensive lake, it occupies a narrow, curving strip
of land along the East African Valley. Lake Nyasa,
known as lake Malawi, accounts for more than
one-fifth of the country’s total area. The economy
of Malawi is predominantly agriculture. Over 80%
of the population is engaged in subsistence
farming.
Land: Malawi stretches about 840 kms North South and varies in width from 10-
160 Kms. It is bordered by Tanzania, Mozambique and Zambia with four basic
regions as far as the type of land is considered
1. East African (or Great) rift Valley
2. Central plateau
3. Highlands
4. Isolated mountains
Soil: Soil distributed in a complex pattern, are composed primarily of red soil,
brown soils and yellow gritty clays on the plateaus.
Climate: There are two main seasons – the dry season, which lasts from May to
October, and the wet season from November – April.
Temperatures vary seasonally, and they tend to decrease on average with
increasing elevations.
